Instagram and WhatsApp link tracking

Instagram link tracking: see which post or WhatsApp message sent each lead

Instagram link tracking means giving every place you post its own tagged link: your bio, each story's Link sticker, your DMs, and on WhatsApp your status and each broadcast. Make them with UTM tags or ownyourclick UTM links. When someone taps and fills your form, the lead lands in your Google Sheet with that source and a hot %.

Works for links to your landing page or an ownyourclick form, not Instagram instant forms (lead ads).Instagram ads →

Why can't Instagram or WhatsApp tell you which post brought a lead?

Instagram can show you how many people tapped a link, and WhatsApp shows you who replied. Neither follows the person to your form, so you can't tell whether Tuesday's story or last week's status brought the enquiry that turned into a client.

Google Analytics doesn't fill the gap either. When a visit arrives without saying where it came from, it counts it as Direct, which its help describes as arriving "via a saved link or by entering your URL". Taps inside apps such as WhatsApp can reach your site that way, so your best channel can look like nobody.

The fix is simple: a different link for every place you post, with the place written into the link.

Use one name per place and keep it lowercase, so instagram never turns into Insta next week:

Where you postutm_sourceutm_mediumutm_content
Instagram bioinstagramsocialbio
A story's Link stickerinstagramsocialthe story, with its date: story-before-after-oct-24
A link you send in DMs (say, to people who comment on a reel)instagramsocialthe reel: dm-reel-5-min-workout
WhatsApp statuswhatsappstatusthe status: free-plan-oct-25
A WhatsApp broadcast or campaignwhatsappbroadcastthe offer: nov-batch
A link you send in a WhatsApp chatwhatsappchatchat

Add utm_campaign when you run a launch or an offer, so you can compare launches later. Instagram ads are different: tag them in Ads Manager instead, as on Facebook ads lead tracking.

How do you make one link for every post?

Free, no account: open the UTM builder, paste your page's address, pick the Instagram bio or WhatsApp preset, change utm_content (and for WhatsApp, utm_medium) to match the table above, and copy the link. It's long, but it works anywhere.

Short links that count every click: in ownyourclick,

  1. Open UTM Links and press New UTM link.
  2. Paste Your website URL (your landing page, your form or your booking page) and press Create link.
  3. On the Manage links tab press + Add a source, pick Instagram or WhatsApp, set its tags (say utm_medium = social, utm_content = story-before-after-oct-24), and press Add source. Add a tag of your own too, such as ref = bio.

Each source is its own short link, like go.ownyourclick.com/your-page, with its own clicks by hour, device and place, and a QR code for flyers and your shop counter. Posting somewhere you didn't make a source for? Add ?utm_source=anything to the link and those clicks show under that name.

The short video on UTM links (2:46) shows it from making the link to seeing each lead's source.

How does the source reach your Google Sheet?

Put the ownyourclick tag on the page your link opens: Pages → Add page, paste the page's address, and paste the tag from its Settings tab into the page's <head>. The click's id travels from your link to your page, so each lead is tied to the exact click and source that brought it.

When someone fills your form, their row in your Google Sheet has Source, UTM medium, UTM content and UTM campaign, your own tags such as ref (under From your links in Configure Sheets), and a HOT % for how long they read, how far they scrolled and what they clicked.

No website? Make a form with Create Form, and share its link (ownyourclick.com/forms/your-link) in your bio, stories and WhatsApp. Turn on Track with statuses + Google Sheet and its leads get a sheet, statuses and a hot % too.

Do the tags survive Instagram's in-app browser?

Yes. The tags are part of the link's address, so they arrive with the visit whether it opens in Instagram's own browser or the phone's.

If you'd rather people land in the phone's browser, open the UTM link's Settings tab and set Where it opens to In the phone's browser. It applies when the link is tapped inside Instagram or Facebook.

What should you do once you know which post brought the lead?

Three things, in your sheet:

  • Post more of what brings hot leads. Filter by UTM content and compare. A story that brings two people at 80% beats a reel that brings ten at 15%. How to tell who's hot.
  • Open the call with their reason. Someone who came from your before-and-after story is thinking about a result, not your price. Start there: "You came from my before-and-after story, right?" A call that starts from what made them reach out feels like a conversation, not a pitch.
  • See which place brings paying clients. Connect Razorpay, Dodo Payments or Stripe and each payment is matched to its lead, so the Payment column sits next to the post that sent them.

Questions

What do people ask?

Can you track link clicks on Instagram?+

Instagram's own insights can show how many people tapped a link. To count clicks per post, story or DM, give each one its own link: an ownyourclick UTM link counts every click by source, hour, device and place, and with the tag on your page, the visits and leads too.

How do I add UTM tags to my Instagram bio link?+

Add ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_content=bio to the end of the address in your bio, or make it with the free UTM builder's Instagram bio preset. Give each story and DM link its own utm_content, so the bio's numbers stay its own.

Can you track clicks on a WhatsApp link?+

WhatsApp doesn't report who tapped a link. Send a short link with its own source instead, such as one for your status and one per broadcast. Each counts its clicks, and each lead who fills your form arrives in your sheet with that source.

Why does Google Analytics show my WhatsApp visits as direct?+

Google Analytics counts a visit as Direct when it can't see where it came from, and taps inside apps such as WhatsApp can arrive that way. A link with utm_source=whatsapp gives the visit its source, so it shows as whatsapp instead.

Does this work for Instagram ads?+

Yes, for ads that send people to your landing page: add URL parameters such as utm_content={{ad.name}} in Ads Manager. Instagram instant forms (lead ads) keep people inside Instagram, so ownyourclick doesn't receive those leads.

Do I need a website to track which post brought a lead?+

No. Make a form with Create Form and share its link in your bio, stories and WhatsApp. Its leads come with their source, and Track with statuses + Google Sheet gives them a sheet and a hot % too.

What does it cost?+

The UTM builder is free with no sign-up. ownyourclick's Solo plan is ₹699 a month ($9 outside India), and every account starts with 7 days of the Team plan free, with no card.
