What are UTM parameters?

Five tags you add to a link. Analytics tools such as Google Analytics, and ownyourclick, read them when someone arrives:

TagSaysExample
utm_sourceWhere the link was postedfacebook, youtube, whatsapp
utm_mediumWhat kind of channelpaid_social, cpc, video, email
utm_campaignWhich campaign or launchdiwali-batch
utm_contentWhich ad, post or buttonreel-student-story
utm_termThe keyword or audienceneet-coaching

Only utm_source is essential; add the others when they help you compare.

How should you name UTMs?

  • Lowercase, always. Analytics tools treat Facebook and facebook as two different sources.
  • No spaces. Use - or _: diwali-batch, not Diwali Batch.
  • One name per place. Decide on instagram (not ig one day and insta the next) and stick to it.
  • A campaign per launch or offer, so you can compare them later.
  • Don't put UTMs on links within your own site. They overwrite where the visitor really came from.

What UTMs should you use for Facebook and Instagram ads?

In Meta Ads Manager, put these in the ad's URL parameters, not in the website address itself. Meta fills in each {{…}} with the real name at every click:

utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_term={{adset.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}&platform={{site_source_name}}

The builder's Meta ads preset fills these in for you. How to see which ad brought each lead.

What about Google Ads, WhatsApp, YouTube and email?

WhereSuggested tags
Google Adsutm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}, in the campaign's final URL suffix. Google fills in {campaignid}.
WhatsApp broadcastutm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=broadcast&utm_campaign=…
YouTube descriptionutm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_content=the-video-name
Instagram bioutm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_content=bio
Email newsletterutm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=…

Google Analytics shows visits by source, medium and campaign. ownyourclick goes further: save the link as an ownyourclick UTM link and you get a short link (go.ownyourclick.com/your-page) that counts every click by source, hour, country and device. Add our tag to your site and it counts visits, leads and purchases too, with the person's details in your Google Sheet. How UTM links work.

Questions

What do people ask?

Is this UTM builder free?+

Yes, completely, and it works without signing up. The link it builds is yours to use anywhere.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?+

Yes. Google Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources, so keep every tag lowercase. The builder does it for you.

Do UTM links hurt SEO?+

Not on links you share in ads, posts, emails and bios. Just don't put UTMs on links between pages of your own website, as they overwrite where visitors really came from in your analytics.

My UTM link is long and messy. Can I shorten it?+

Yes. Save it as an ownyourclick UTM link to get a short go.ownyourclick.com link that also counts every click. That needs an account; the 7-day trial is free, with no card.

Where do I put UTM parameters in Facebook ads?+

In Ads Manager, in the ad's URL parameters field under Tracking, not in the website URL. Meta's dynamic parameters such as {{ad.name}} are filled in when someone clicks.
